How to Apply

Applications for the Biological Design PhD program are submitted and processed through the ASU Graduate College.

The application deadline for the Biological Design program is January 1, 2009.

Prior to submitting the online application, candidates should have their Personal Statement and Resume ready to be uploaded into the application as .doc, .rtf, .pdf, or .txt file types. Additionally, candidates should have the names and emails of their recommenders ready to enter into the online application:

  • Personal Statement: This document should reflect your career and educational goals, and should explain why you are interested in pursuing this program. Candidates should describe their prior and current research experience. Your statement should be 1-3 pages.
  • Resume: Your resume should reflect your prior research and employment experience and list honors, awards, memberships held and any publications.

Additionally, candidates must submit the following information:

  • GRE test scores: The institution code for ASU is 4007 and the department code is 0000. Subject test scores are also recommended but not required.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Please enter the names and contact information for three recommenders into the online application where requested. Recommendations should be relative to your academic career. Recommenders will receive the request to provide recommendations by automatic email.

Application Review & Selection Process

The faculty admission committee will begin reviewing completed application upon receipt. Top candidates currently residing in the U. S. will be invited to visit the ASU campus for a two-day recruitment visit. Expenses for the visit will be covered. During this visit candidates will interview with numerous faculty, tour ASU laboratory facilities and meet with current students. Admission decisions will be made following the visit. International candidates residing overseas will be scheduled for a telephone interview with a faculty admission committee member.
